TWIUI, Novellus leads the move to copper (vs. aluminum) interconnects (between the millions of semiconductor gates on a chip), which is better for producing smaller geometries, uses less power, generates less heat, etc. That is compounded by demand for new equipment to handle larger wafers.

Copper is being adopted broadly. Intel uses it in the Pentium IV, Micron in memory, etc. Amat makes plenty of copper equipment, too.
