HA'ARETZ Questions Sharon's Ability To Be A Peacemaker...

<<Several recently-raised proposals present reasonable chances for Israeli-Palestinian and an Israeli-Arab peace, based on the principle of land for peace. Israel now needs a leader who will grasp these ideas and lead the majority of its people to recognize that the path to the realization of the founding fathers' vision lies in a withdrawal to the 1967 borders. As far as can be determined, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is not the person to take on this historic role.>>

<<In its 54th year of independence, Israel has tried to use force to solve security problems that have threatened the country, but it has been an unsuccessful effort. The various military responses - sieges, assassinations, incursions and Operation Defensive Shield - to murderous attacks by Palestinians have not yielded their desired results. On the contrary, these efforts, in which the Israel Defense Forces has given of its best, including those Israeli soldiers who have sacrificed their lives, have increased Palestinian enmity and have strengthened those seeking to wreak destruction in the streets of Israel.>>

Hi Hawkmoon; Re: "GST, talk about nonsense... You have an affinity for citing the amount of money the US pays Israel [vs Palestine Authority] every year, but you seem unwilling to cite the amount of money we pay the Egyptians ($2 Billion per annum)."

Egypt isn't a party to the conflict, at least not any more.

Re: "Nor do you cite the reason the US pays Israel and Egypt such large sums of money.. The US does so solely to buy peace between them." Well, maybe the US sends the money to Egypt for that reason, but the US was supporting Israel long before they signed a peace with Egypt. In any case, paying people not to fight has got to be the stupidest foreign policy decision ever made that didn't involve violence.

Re: "Take the money away and the US loses its sole leverage over Israel foreign and military policy." Since we don't appear to have any leverage over Israel's military policy, I don't think that this is much of an argument.

Hawk: "So whenever you mention the $3 Billion the US gives Israel, without citing that an almost similar amount goes to Egypt, people like me will be there to remind you." If Egypt did anything like what Sharon was doing right now as we speak, I can assure you I would be equally outraged. What we give Israeli is a cash gift -- money deposited directly to their account to do as they like. Given what we have seen in the last two weeks that should end. No more money for Israel.
