Unfortunately, the federal government relies on industry to give it "correct" energy figures. The oil cartel has long been for getting rid of the energy department altogether. It was Carter's idea to keep a watch on Big Oil. They consider the energy department their enemy and they pollute it and mislead it. For too long Big Oil has held too much power in the energy field. Can we trust them any longer?
No, we need more regulation over them, not less. Enron alone proves this beyond any shadow of a doubt. Enron wasn't an SEC problem so much as an energy business problem, and a political one. Bush-Cheney bear much responsibility.
