I heard a commentator on the teevee say that Chavez isn't captive to any isms at all. He's more of an iconoclast. Being from a poor background himself, he knows how to tap into the anti-elitist sentiment down there. When he first came to power I thought of him as a left wing populist and I was holding out hope he might really accomplish something. I don't know how he'll justify to his people why he let the military fire on those protesters last Thursday. He's proven himself to be quite the ruthless autocrat.
