STRONG AND WEAK POINTS OF MOSCOW REGION'S CELLULAR NETWORKS, ACCORDING TO
VREMYA NOVOSTEI DAILY ----From Data Rox on RB

Tuesday April 16 12:00am
TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES MARKET
Copyright 2002 Agency WPS

Moscow Cellular Communications (MCC) works in NMT-450 analog standard. MCC is a
member of SOTEL federal network, which has a large coverage zone and provides roaming
services in more than 700 Russian towns.
Low-frequency far-reaching base stations provide communications for immense territory.
MCC offers a wide range of user plans. Quality of voice transfer is rather good though
sometimes there is some unwanted noise. The planned transition to CDMA-450 digital
standard does not imply that the analog network will stop operation: both analog and
digital systems will work simultaneously for a couple of years. The main drawback of MCC's
NMT-450 network is unstable communication in Moscow, while the main drawback of the
standard itself is a relatively high radiation level of NMT-450 user units.

BeeLine-800 network (DAMPS digital standard). Coverage area exceeds the boundaries of
the Moscow region. Most of the subscribers use Bee Plus Standard plan. Corbina Telecom
corporation offers unlimited talk-time plans with direct Moscow numbers from its own
phone number reserve. Stability of signal and quality of voice communication are very high.
National roaming is available in more than 150 Russian towns. Drawbacks: there are some
uncovered areas on the Moscow region's border.

Sonet (CDMA-800 digital standard). Sonet network covers Moscow and some Near-Moscow
regions. Per-second charging of calls beginning from the first second of talk, interesting
service plans. Stability of communication is quite satisfactory, quality of voice transfer is
very high. Drawbacks: small coverage area, handsets without Russian menu, unstable
communication on ground floors of buildings.

There is a three page ad for mMode in the Chicago Tribune today. The ad seems to show some services that arent available yet (like taking pictures with your handsets).

I really think that AWE is making a mistake if the content for mMode is just another version of the wireless web by PCS. Customers will probably be curious enough to take a look and if they are dissatisfied (again!) it is going to be tough to get them back. They should have waited for the launch of handsets that use cHTML and WAP 2.0 later this year.
