Another self-contradictory Kristof column.

It's a lofty ideal, but in fact we negotiate with terrorists all the time. That's how a cease-fire was reached this year in Sri Lanka, and it's the basis for peace talks to end rebellions in Sudan, Congo and Angola.

...
Our principle should not be "Never negotiate with terrorists" but rather "Don't reward terrorism."

Two simple points: 1) Negotiating with Arafat has definitely been tried, and found impossible. 2) Does Kristof suggest that Sharon is currently rewarding Arafat, but that making no response, or offering more concessions under fire, would constitute a punishment for terrorism? What exactly is he suggesting here? Is there a logical point?

===> "Yet Mr. Arafat is such a catastrophe as a leader that it falls upon Mr. Sharon to display enough wisdom for both."

On one hand, Arab nations have the misfortune of being ruled by selfish, bigoted "oil rich" dictators, who care less if the common Arab lives in misery.

On the other hand, Arab nations have the misfortune of being menaced and influenced by Arab terrorist groups, who care less if the common Arab lives in misery.

So...... who do the Arabs hate? Why, the United States and Israel, of course.

"You can fool the Arab people some of the time, you can fool the Arab people most of the time, but you can't fool the Arab people all of the time, or can they?"
