Aid charities appeal to Israel for refugee camp entry Story filed: 12:11 Tuesday 16th April 2002 ananova.com International aid agencies are appealing to Israel to let them into Jenin refugee camp. The charities want to help survivors of Israeli-Palestinian fighting and collect the bodies of those who have died. The UN Relief and Works Agency has sent trucks to the camp entrance and is looking for permission to distribute aid there. "We need access," said Rene Aquarone, a spokesman for the UN agency which looks after Palestinians in refugee camps. "We tried to distribute food yesterday but the authorisation to enter came so late that the truck could only get into the camp at 6 o'clock in the evening - and then we were not given permission to unload and had to leave." Spokeswomen for the World Health Organisation and UNICEF also say the agencies were unable to deliver food and medical aid to needy people who had been under curfew in Jenin for more than a week. Ambulances from UNRWA and the International Committee of the Red Cross were able to collect eight bodies from the camp late on Monday for a brief period, Mr Aquarone said. "But a lot of the dead are not there for the taking. We're going to need heavy lifting equipment to wrest them from the rubble - and to look for survivors." Israel and the Palestinians have been arguing over who will retrieve the bodies. On Sunday, the Israeli Supreme Court rejected an army plan to bury most of the bodies from the camp in an Israeli cemetery, and insisted the Red Cross monitor the gathering of the corpses.
