The Tunisian government bans Islamist parties and jailed or drove into exile leaders and leading activists of the country's Nahda Islamist party early in the 1990s. The government calls the party and its leaders "terrorists."

Tunisian leaders have repeatedly said their country is "immune" to terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism and blamed Western governments, mainly in Europe, for giving shelter to exiled Islamic militants.
