<<Ariel Sharon's mission - his enemies call it a dangerous obsession - is to fight for Israel's security, believing all the while that the end justifies the means>>

IMO, this quote from that BBC article nicely summarizes things.

Mr Sharon rose to the rank of brigadier general and commanded a division during the Six Day war of June 1967 in which Israel captured East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The harsh occupation measures that he enforced there gave many Palestinians their first taste of a man who has become their sworn enemy.

Amazing how the BBC could get Sharon's war record so wrong...

Sharon commanded the 9th armored brigade in the Sinai during the 1967 war.. He never fought in the West Bank.

After the war, he was in charge of the Gaza strip where he rooted out guerilla cells, sometimes ruthlessly, and "pacified" the territory. (he was heavily criticized for his methods then, just as he is now)..

It wasn't until he was Minister of Agriculture in 1977 that he had ANY direct influence on the West Bank, where he commissioned extensive road-building throughout the territory.

One thing you have to understand about Sharon.. He'll do what he believes must be done, regardless of outside world opinion. If that means bulldozing houses of guerillas and terrorist sympathizers, he'll do it. He's done it before and he's still around politically. When the dirty deeds have to be done, he's the one the Israeli people call upon to carry them out...

And the fact that he's even in power is indicative of just how far Arafat has miscalculated the balance of political sentiment within Israel. Arafat has squandered all of the good feelings and sympathies once displayed by the Israeli left. Now even they are willing to let Sharon "have his way"..
