Do us all a favor and stay in England where that kind of dunderheaded "thinking" is more popular....

You must recall my dunderheaded thinking and whining about not having US troops on the ground during the early stages of Afghanistan....

...that failure to commit U.S. ground troops to hunt him [Bin Laden] was its gravest error in the war against al Qaeda, according to civilian and military officials with first-hand knowledge....

...Without professing second thoughts about Tora Bora, Franks has changed his approach fundamentally in subsequent battles, using Americans on the ground as first-line combat units.

...Bush Administration Illusion and Image

From the same article...

...In an interview with The Washington Post in late December, Bush displayed a scorecard of al Qaeda leaders on which he had drawn the letter X through the faces of those thought dead. By last month, Bush began saying that continued public focus on individual terrorists, including bin Laden, meant that "people don't understand the scope of the mission."....

and...."The goal there was never after specific individuals," Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last week. "It was to disrupt the terrorists."

Well then, why did Bush have the damn scorecard?

The problem to be solved, of course, was that we didn't get that many...we needed to change the image and create a new illusion. Alternatively, you could claim that Bush didn't initially understand the scope of the mission and Cheney finally explained it to him.

In the fortnight since President Bush delivered his forceful Rose Garden address calling for an end to Palestinian terrorism and Israeli occupation of the West Bank, he has distanced himself, both physically and rhetorically, from his assertive stance.

Bush has not made substantive statements about the Middle East for eight days, and he has not taken questions since he directed Israel 11 days ago to begin its pullback "without delay" -- which aides characterized as meaning "immediately." ....

Image ..we need to worry about image

......Bush's advisers say the administration has not changed its position on the conflict, and is merely pursuing a nuanced and gradual implementation of his outline.

Perhaps you should take a minute or two and comtemplate why Carl Rove invited some historians into the White House to elaborate on the characteristics of "great Presidents".

Image and illusion.
