Albert, re: "Recall that I also projected that the new accounting would be celebrated as real earnings in 1st quarter of this year."

I couldn't find your post but the change was mentioned several times:
#reply-16197666 First mention of FASB 142
#reply-16620045 Intel states impact of about $1.5B for 2002
#reply-16913930 FASB noted in 4Q01 earnings release as follows:

"The effect of the goodwill non-amortization provisions of FAS 141 and 142 is expected to result in a substantial reduction in the difference between the company's earnings excluding acquisition-related costs and the company's earnings on a GAAP basis. Intel expects to continue to report earnings excluding acquisition-related costs for a period of time to provide a consistent basis for financial comparisons."

Intel has always emphasized the pre-acquisition charges earnings. Prior to this quarter their headlines noted pro-forma first and then GAAP. Comparing YOY, pro forma net income did decline slightly ($0.16 to $0.15) but this includes the $155M Intergraph charge which reportedly reduced earnings by about a penny (more like two cents with simple division over share count but probably some tax benefit).
