Jonh, re: "So what are the market's thoughts on AMD? Do you think they will meet the expectations?"

I should have a better answer to this than for Intel. AMD has made a number of statements regarding the 02Q1 and they seemed aggressive at the time. I was optimistic for my contest guesstimate.

However, I have never had a good feeling for what the market expects of AMD. Blowout quarters far beyond any expectations with rosy projections and the stock falls the next week. Doesn't matter unless one is trading or the company needs the stock equity for a transaction but still frustrating.

Re: It appears the market didn't expect the increased gross margins

Dump enough of your workforce and it can do wonders for margins.

For the good news to continue, all they need to do is keep shrinking the company faster than revenues drop.

"So what are the market's thoughts on AMD? Do you think they will meet the expectations? Remember "whisper numbers", I guess that's a ghost term from "the bubble"?"

I think Reg FD eliminated the assumed credibility of "wisper numbers"; the number itself carried with it the magic of a supposed connection to someone "in the know" who had been briefed by the company.

This briefing of course would have been as illegal as not disclosing the inside loans to Enron, but like those loans, the authorities and the courts simply overlooked the practice.

All reg FD was and is, is an announcement that the SEC was going to begin to enforce 10b-5.
