Did Wintel ever break through the maximum of 600 users barrier that it used to have? If not, large installations can't switch. Also, it is not a simple task to switch complicated applications from a Sun server to Wintel, so existing Sun installations would still probably upgrade to Sun equipment. Some new installations might be lost to Wintel, that previously would have gone to Sun(or some other UNIX box). Just my 2 cents.

If you configure server grade (as opposed to desktop PC) Wintel hardware, I think you'll find that there's little, if any, price differential for similar capabilities, contrary to popular belief. Sun has servers starting at under $1K list price. Sun is also the only place you can get binary compatible scaling from that price point all the way up to the $1 million + class of machine.

In addition, the Wintel crowd ignores the cost of software licenses. Price the server versions of Windows some time and compare with the price of Solaris (free up to 8-way, as I recall).

All JMHO.
