I know of no reason for someone to memorize the state capitols. Instead, they should be teaching kids HOW to learn, where to look for information, and how to reach a logical conclusion.

Granted, some things just need to be memorized. But the trend to rote learning will lead us down a path that has been traveled by Japan: lots of memorization, little unique, innovative thinking.

The reason that today's kids cannot find California, Canada, Washington, D.C., much less the Persian Gulf or Vietman on a globe or world map is parents who find the subject of Geography irrelevant.

Then, when people from those far corners of the earth murder Americans by the thousands, the soft-headed American is easier on posters like rich4alqueda when they defend Palastinian suicide bombers.

Where, on the globe, are the former Axis powers of WWII? Where are the 3 countries of the current 'Axis of Evil"? Not important? Whatever you say...
