<<how to understand history instead of memorizing it,>>

ROFLMAO!!! IMPOSSIBLE to 'understand' it, much less appreciate it, without KNOWING any of it.

You are doing your children an incredible dis-service that will cause them great suffering after you are gone...

"how to reach logical conclusions, how to understand history instead of memorizing it, etc"

I'm not very confident that an underpaid teacher in our public school system can teach these kinds of things. Take what the kid learns and find ways to tie it into real life and make it interesting for them. I for one found memorizing the multiplication tables very helpful, and I'm pretty good at math now. Wouldn't expect more than the basics (3 r's) from our public schools. Don't really want someone that I don't know that well to tell my kid "how" to understand history. Me and my wife will have to asses how our child is understanding the world based (partly) on what he has learned from the lessons and exercises he gets in school. One of the most important part of schooling that you can't duplicate at home very easily are the social dynamics of getting along with groups, working together, making friends, etc.

All that said, if my child does not get a good education, I will blame myself as a parent. To count on the gov't to do all or even most of the teaching is folly imo.
