In Vietnam the problem was the strategic military objective. The military objective was not the core problem, IMO. The core problem was that none of the governments we installed in S. Vietnam were capable of governing. It didn't help that we were walking into a situation trying to rectify mistakes that had been made more than a decade earlier. That often doesn't work very well. It is self-defeating to look at any war, particularly that one, in exclusively military terms.
