What's polluting the corporate climate is the "X percent return at any cost" philosophy prevalent in most boardrooms today. Used to be Joe Stockholder was content if his business grew steadily at, say, a 7 percent clip a year. Now if the stock price doesn't double every couple years, corporate heads roll.

The end result, of course, is that more and more corporations are no longer concerned with growing the company ... only growing the bottom line on a short-term basis.

And there's a helluva difference.
