The Government does not get a competative advantage by claiming common resources (since it basicly has them to begin with). The profit motive is largely absent. This doesn't make the govt. ideal, but it makes them the nearest thing to an honest broker.

1 - Your argument assumes that claiming common resources is the only or at least by far the biggest problem.

2- The government claims far more resources that it does not itself produce then any private company claims.

3 - The government doesn't have a profit motive, but its parts have motivation to grow and become more powerful. Power is every bit as currupting as money, maybe more so.
