I remember one particularly troubled student who had a history of failure. He would enter my classroom each day, take his seat; and declare loudly and beligerantly how much he hated my class and how the work that I had lined out for him was unfair and too hard, etc. He would usually complete the work but not without several testy remarks during the period like, "this stuff is stupid, I'm quitting this dumb school and I hate you." On Monday of the third week he walked in and began the usual routine. I said, "Get out of my classroom." He said, "Where do I go, the principles office?" I said, "I don't care, just get out." He said, "I need a pass to go to the principals office." I said, "I am not giving you anything, just get out." He said, "What am I supposed to do now." I said, "Run away." He said, "Huh." I said, "Drop-out, run away to California, and get a job. Do what ever you want just get out of my classroom." He said, "Hey, you can't say that. I'm telling the principal." So I repeated it. He said, "And I'm telling my dad. He'll come and kick your ass." I said, "Good, tell your dad, tell the principal, tell the Governor, and your Grandma; and bring them all to my class. I will talk to anyone who understands that I am paid to prepare and present lessons in this class and that no one can legally interfere with me performing this role as a teacher. To do so, interferes with the rights guaranteed my students to recieve those lessons. I will talk to anyone who understands that students are required by law to come to class and recieve an education from me that is free and equally distributed among my students. I have nothing else to do with you, as you apparenly do not agree to these conditions; now GET OUT!!! There is more to the story but the outcome is that this student ended up in the 98%ile of his class and gave me credit for my part. I didn't do anything but what I saw as my job, and declare the truth about my position and his role as a student. Does the government feel equally adamant about the nature of the student/teacher roles in public education. The government has certainly bent over backwards to make sure students aren't spoken to in the harsh way I spoke to the above student. How many ways can you spell, "Harrass, Provoke, or Abuse." Parents are responsible for making sure that their children attend a free and public education. Are they not also responsible for making sure that the student know the requirements of his participation as I laid it out in the above description? If a student interferes with the rights of another child to benefit unencumbered from a free and public education has he not violated the rights of that child? Lets start with one itty-bitty law that declares a parental responsibility to participate as the responsible adult in charge of their childs school program. If a child is not attending or non-compliant regarding school programs, proceedure or policy, then the responsible parent should be required to fully participate until resolution is reached. Failure to do so should bring criminal charges.
