NYT editorial once again in a display of political pygmism misses the point sorely Sir!! It is self-defeating and self serving in context of war against Global Terror Inc!!
<He has, until now, won broad support for his antiterrorism campaign within Pakistan, especially among the nation's educated elite — members of its business and landowning class, politicians, human rights groups and even many mainstream religious leaders. His recent blunt tactics to promote the referendum risk alienating the very supporters who have stood by him.The general's attacks on Ms. Bhutto and Mr. Sharif yesterday appear to have been inspired by the fact that these two former leaders' supporters are actively opposing the referendum. General Musharraf said the two would be arrested if they tried to return to Pakistan. He is not the first leader to equate endorsement of his leadership with the survival of his country, but such an overstatement is hardly likely to help get the country back to elected government.
The Bush administration has mildly questioned the legitimacy of the referendum. It should more forcefully tell General Musharraf that his plan can only undermine the respect he has earned throughout the world since Sept. 11. >
The Bush administration is condoning the referendum and would do nothing because they fortunately exactly know what is happening on the ground unlike NYT who are lisitneing to old bird B. Bhutto. Whenver she is in town they write one for her!!
NYT editorial is a joy killer, it is shocking to see how a ‘young kid on the block’ (the author of the editorial) in Manhattan can have such a shallow view of the globe and what is happening in Pakistan. Skyscrapers views are sometime very narrow although skyscraper offers wide ranging angles but once on the top people become tied up to their own little narrow world view they see from their small little windows.
Referendum is the best thing possible, let people of Pakistan tell the world on 30th April referendum, that 11th sept voice was theirs not of Musharraf alone, only our enemies who have always portrayed as a trigger happy nation are most unhappy. The choice is stark and bitter, people of Pakistan will once again cast extremism out, the shocking thing is that NYT cannot see it, they are blindfolded and they leading people into area they should not, they should realize 30th April will drive final nail in the coffins of the extremists forces and that is good news for the world and for our neighbours. Instead of rejoicing a sad melancholy editorial is a poor pay back to nice man like Musharraf. It is imperative for the remaining extremist element to see the fate of 'extremism' as people in hoards will come out and support reforms that are based on 11th Sept eye opener.
No other country, but Pakistan is the one that has saved itself and bought some grace period after post 11th Sept crisis, if any country can claim some lesson from it, Pakistan undoubtedly is one big example, we were at verge of mega collapse led by few thousand Mullahs, the policy that is being asked to be continued and ratified and which h NYT sadly misses is ‘the reform agenda’ that demands Pakistan first ahead of ‘Islamic world priorities,’ that was or could have been one reason that you could find Pakistan in most unlikely of the places like Orisaa or Bihar or even Palestine, now diplomatically Pakistan has kept a distance form their all too familiar posture of siding with Arafat and his acrobatics, we have known to learn that he has to live for his own nation and fight his own survival, like he does intellignetly in case of Kashmir cause, we are not interested, that lukewarm reaction to global Islamic intifidas is the first step of recuperative does that Pakistan badly needs, this presidency of Musharraf has brought that hope of recuperation and this is what NYT editorial misses sorely and most shallow piece of journalistic wastage of space comes in to existence that vilifies even their own desires!! To keep Islamic world less militant is the prayer of the world, here when it actually happening to be a joy killer is such a waste of intellectual editorial space by the some extremely intelligent but narrow minded people. I wish when NYT wrote this piece they should have requested their darling Ms. Bhutto to cough up her stored millions in Zurich like Nigerian Abbacha, she is on self exile to save her millions as she wants to return only after being elected as PM so that no asks her any further questions on missing millions for which she has been a declared convict.
NYT has no idea what they are talking about, they don't know the area, both Nawaz and Bhutto have in between 1.6 billion $ to account for. A country that is so poor that it hardly can pay for basic needs of its people the two democrats that NYT is supporting have in Swiss banks 1.6 billion $. Now President is a dictator, Islam loves dictator, it is not about Pakistan, it is about a person who had the vision as dictator to stay clear of the morass created by Talebin and OBL. Now those who take exception of President as dictator should see the freedom of press we have, yesterday the whole press was up in arms in Lahore against the President, ‘The News’ and all extremist religious parties are running a joint campaign to eradicate him, Bhutto and Nawaz for their own lust of power have joined hands with the extremist to bring him down, does NYT realises that what is going to be the cost to the region of instability ensues, of course Musharraf alone is not the factor it is the institution of army that has saved Pakistan from last 55 years from infighting of the politicians who have lost every opportunity that was available to construct he country. The two exiled leaders have both two chances and both want after individual aggrandisements, does NYT tells you that that both have huge personal fortunes tacked up in Swiss banks?
The collective opposition of extremists and so called political leadership is running an open campaign to bring him down, the courts are being asked to invalidate the unconstitutional nature of referendum. I can say what I want that is the measure of freedom for me as far as any country go, as a nation we are very self critical, we do talk about our problems and we have the ability to see good of the others and incorporate, we are tackling with greatest of pride the in bred poverty that erodes human values, we are under the President making new schools, we are trying to come hard on militancy although I know that it was army that was responsible of r our militant character and I also would concede that it was CIA and USA that asked our army to do the dirty job back in 1978.
Those huge democracies where people sleep on street 3 million of them in one large city are something that I would think twice about, those who can never be critical of self, those who see no wrong around them in name of our great fatherland, unobstructed view of the world through their own myopic angle. We came out of it, we are a nation on them mend, and NYT has no idea, once again, had NYT been more successful in incorporating a sense of geography and analysis with historical references the readiness of USA people at large would have been far better to see and incorporate the world.
From 11th of sept NYT has been totally wrong about Pakistan on every count, they are 101 of global politics, on Palestine they have their own liberal myopic agenda, they cannot realise the destruction that have been caused if Pakistani President would have dilly dallied, the nation is fully after him. NYT reported not one but ten times that he would not survive 11th Sept morass, not only on 9tyh Oct they predicted an internal coup by the imaginary ISI generals and this was fully supported by our Indian press who have gone blind in their pursuit of man who created the debacle of Kargil. Now, as nation comes out and is ready to support him with thumping majority, every one on the block irks.
NYT instead of thanking him that he made things possible for USA in no time talks and is critical of a referendum in which every minority, every non-Muslim and Muslim on equal basis after 20 years of separate electorate is being asked one simple question, that is
Do you want my presidency to continue so that I can continue my reforms? Now if this is not democratic what else is?
The democrats in my country had screwed the country economically and politically, they could not have had taken the decisions taken by the Army post 11th Sept. I accept the folly of my country but before NYT should jump guns and talks about democracy they should see that our ‘benevolent dictatorship’ where we can be critical of our President is the best bet within the Islamic world, we as a Muslims nation are prone to a strong leader from Morocco to Dar-us-Salam show me one democratic Islamic country. We can denounce him and can vote against him or tell him to get lost on 30th April. The government not people on 11th of sept took decision, now we will see how majority will speak. I think that this is the chance for Pakistan to prove that decision that NYT/CNN thought was not supported by the by and large majority was actually the decision of the country, the silent majority of the country will speak, I think between 25-35 million out of total of 40 million eligible voters will cast their vote, and most of them nearly 70-80% who will cast votes will favour the reform anti-extremist agenda. Does NYT bothers to tell the world how healthy it would be that in this very tense Islamic non-Islamic clash in Palestine that it is now being portrayed by clever Arafat, one 'crazy' country like mine who otherwise would have been in fore front of this action only if diplomatically will reaffirm that we want reforms and those reforms are to be headed by President who saved us form daisy cutters on 11th, otherwise in name of Islam once again we would have lost our senses and played in the hands of an Arab OBL..
NYT writers have made more rumour mongering on future of our country due to propaganda of the strategists who think Pakistan would not survive next few years, of course Indians have played a significant role to contaminate the environment vis a vis image of Pakistan and you know it well, however, rationally (that has really surprised NYT and our arch enemy who had seen Pakistan like Arafat missing opportunity after opportunity to self destruct- post Musharraf 11th Sept Pakistan is different realistic country) they way we have handled ourselves and conducted ourselves by putting everyone on the back foot by extending the hand of friendship in Nepal and continually talking about friendship and talks is something anew approach and less belligerent that has helped reduced tensions in our region.
NYT should see the upcoming referendum as a gauge where Pakistan I majority wants to go, instead of buying the few militants shown on screen b the CNN between 11th Sept to fall of Kabul, we will see that reforms that actually means closing terrorists producing factories of mullahs will be supported by most of us. Instead of rejoicing once again our dear NYT is trying to press their democratic credential ahead of ground realities that is Pakistan should be headed by someone who can assure continuity that can ensure FBI led operation in Lahore to catch Abu Zubayda or for that matter OBL if he is alive that I doubt soon. It is wake up time for NYT, world is about analysis that as to done in context of contemporary ground realities, those realities demands that Pakistan as key Islamic nuclear state should be kept neutral as far as Islamic fervour goes, should be kept engaged and should be kept out of Mullah hand’s 30th April provides all that, anti Musharraf forces are people who would send 30,00 jihadis to be annihilated to Palestine like they did in this present Afghans conflict, the choice is stark and bitter, people of Pakistan will once again cast mullahs out, the shocking thing is that NYT cannot see it, they are blindfolded and they leading people into area they should not, they should realize 3oth April will drive final nail in the coffins of the extremists forces and that is good news for the world and for our neighbours, unfortunately blinded with hate they forget rationality of the purpose and want continued instability so that Pakistan once again get into habitual self destruction process that it was ensnared in during last 12 years of democratic role. I think 30th April will help people tell the world that 11th sept voice was theirs not of Musharraf alone, only our enemies who have always portrayed as a trigger happy nation are most unhappy. |
