7:42AM Nokia estimates raised at Merrill Lynch (NOK) 20.63: -- Update -- Merrill Lynch out of Europe raises their FY02 est to $0.75 from $0.65 due to better than expected margins in mobile phones in Q1; new est is slightly above the $0.74 Multex consensus. Maintains Neutral rating and believes the stock will mark time in the near-term, with a floor valuation of $17.

7:32AM Advanced Micro downgraded by Merrill/Salomon (AMD) 14.82: Merrill Lynch downgrades to long-term BUY from Strong Buy; says next few quarters look tough as company struggles to keep pace with Intel's (INTC) Northwood P4 and AMD's updated Hammer architecture doesn't ship until Q4. Salomon Smith Barney also downgrades to OUTPERFORM from Buy and cuts target to $17 from $25; concerned about weak unit shipments and severe competitive pricing pressure from INTC.

Brown upgrades to STRONG BUY from Buy due to valuation, strong balance sheet, positive cash flow, share buyback commitment, annuity stream businesses, and mkt leadership; Price target is $110. On the other hand, Prudential says that Hold-rated IBM's Q1 was "worse than you think"; while mgmt expressed comfort with the revised FY02 consensus est of $4.16, firm doubts this is achievable given the gradual margin rebound and reduced below-the-line benefits; cuts FY02 ests to $3.75 from $4.08 and FY03 to $4.51 from $4.90 (bothbelow consensus); price target is $81.

7:30AM Plexus Corp exceeds Q2 consensus (PLXS) 25.01: Reports Q2 diluted earnings of $0.03 a share, $0.01 better than the Multex consensus. Sales declined 17.5% to $231.16 mln (consensus $216.34 mln). For Q3, co sees EPS of $0.06-$0.09 (consensus $0.07).

7:24AM Handset sales estimates : Nokia (NOK) reduced its industry handset sales estimate to 400-420 mln from 420-440 mln; Motorola (MOT) reaffirmed its 420 mln estimate yesterday. Taken together, these statements suggest handset sales estimates are at least edging toward the lower end of the consensus range, which has been weighing on Qualcomm (QCOM) as well.

7:22AM Nokia EPS results exceed expectations (NOK) 20.63: Reports Q1 earnings of US$0.17 per share, $0.02 better than the Multex consensus of $0.15. Revenues fell 12.4% to $6.23 bln vs the $6.35 bln consensus. For Q2, co sees EPS of $0.16-$0.18 (consensus $0.17). Remains comfortable with current consensus estimates for the full yr.

7:01AM Nokia reduces full growth outlook to 4-9% from 15% (NOK) 20.63: -- Update -- Co fails to meet Q1 networks sales estimates due to lower-than-expected 2G investments in China and Europe. Based on Q1 developments, NOK now expects an annual decline in the GSM and overall infrastructure market in 2002. For the full yr, NOK sees sales growth of 4-9%, which compares negatively to a previous forecast of 15%. Co lowers handset volume estimates to a range of 400-420 mln from 420-440 mln.
