AMD, Intel Heat Up Mobile MPU Market By Alex Romanelli, Electronic News Online -- 4/17/2002 3:20:00 PM e-insite.net Competition between the two rival microprocessor companies is heating up in the mobile space, with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) today rolled out its first mobile processor manufactured on 0.13-micron technology. AMD today said it already has design wins with Sharp, Epson Direct and Packard Bell and others for its new mobile Athlon XP processor. The new 0.13-micron chip maintains socket A and pin compatibility with AMD’s 0.18-micron mobile processors, but adds a 266MHz front-side bus option. The company said it is also now sampling a low power version of the mobile AMD Athlon XP processor, with a new micro pin grid array (uPGA) packaging. This chip is aimed at the thin-and-light notebook market. Not to be outdone, Intel Corp. today announced five mobile processors, which it said are designed for the industry’s smallest mobile computers. Like AMD’s new mobile processor, Intel’s low voltage and ultra low voltage processors are manufactured on 0.13-micron technology and aimed at ultra-light mobile computers. Intel said some of its mobile processors allow users more than six hours battery life without recharging. The low voltage mobile processors are aimed at mini-notebooks: spindle systems that weigh less than five pounds and are less than 1-inch thick. The ultra low voltage mobile processors are aimed at sub-notebooks and emerging market segments such as the Tablet PC category. The company said the ultra low voltage mobile Intel Pentium III processor M is its lowest power consuming mobile processor, running at 800MHZ and not requiring a fan. Intel said this chip is also suitable for the emerging class of ultra dense blade servers.
