Taiwan is to seek to buy Patriot III missiles from the United States to boost its defense capability amid military threats from China. Military authorities in Taiwan and the US had reached a consensus for a request from Taipei to buy the weaponry produced by US-based Raytheon Company, the United Daily News reported Thursday.

The new missiles would be deployed in central and southern Taiwan, the paper said.

The defense ministry declined to comment on the report.

A US military delegation recently visited Taiwan to discuss arms sales, training programs and personnel exchanges as well as offering advice to the island's defense ministry, the paper said.
