KDDI says may be Japan's top 3G operator (Rewrites lead, adds background) TOKYO, April 18 (Reuters) - KDDI Corp (9433.T) said on Thursday that its ``au'' wireless unit would probably be the largest third-generation (3G) phone operator in Japan, selling 280,000 3G handsets in April, the first month of its launch. On April 1, au started its CDMA2000 1x service, offering fast Internet access, moving picture clips and global positioning system (GPS) services. Japan's largest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc (9437.T), which launched its 3G service in October last year, has seen a slow start so far, signing up about 89,000 3G users. Unlike DoCoMo, which has had to build a 3G network from scratch, which has pushed up its handset and service charges, KDDI has simply upgraded its existing networks to launch 3G, allowing it to offer competitive pricing. KDDI is pinning its hopes on the 3G service to regain ground lost to J-Phone Co Ltd, operated by Japan Telecom Co Ltd (9434.T) and Britain's Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L), which overtook it last month as Japan's second-largest wireless operator. KDDI President Tadashi Onodera said sales of 3G phones had been in line with expectations and it aimed to regain the number two spot with 3G. ``I believe we can attract subscribers with the new services,'' he told a news conference. Onodera said 60 to 70 percent of the 3G buyers were existing au users who renewed their handsets.
