Ref < Do you really think Intel should be running server farms? Their competency is making complex components, not running a service sector business. The only value I can see is as a lab for understanding the concerns of the end users. >

The server farm business is indeed the advanced laboratory for the server chip design business.

In the past Intel used the systems business as a "facilitator" for the the chips it made. The systems divisions helped define the leading chips, gave instant applications feedback, even gave the system design specifications to other users, and in countless other ways helped grow the mainstream chip business. And when the systems business was not critical anymore, and if it was not profitable, it was scrapped or sold. Examples are Intel's memory system business in the early days of semiconductor memory, and microprocessor systems business in the the early microprocessor days.

Hopefully the same hard nosed approach will be used for the server farm business.

John, Re: "Do you really think Intel should be running server farms? Their competency is making complex components, not running a service sector business."

What's wrong with services? Didn't IBM become pretty successful after they came into that market?
