EMC Global Services Contracted by Citizens Financial Group to Protect Customer Data
Leading Bank Relies on EMC Global Services to Speed Implementation and Ensure Successful Outcome of Advanced Business Continuity System
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2002-- EMC Corporation today announced Citizens Financial Group, Inc., one of the nation's 20 largest commercial banks, has contracted with EMC Global Services to purchase and implement an additional 30 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage and EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software. The technology will be used to create a sophisticated business continuity solution that will provide greater information security for the bank's two million customers.

Kenneth Trudel, Citizens' Vice President, Operations and Technology Group, said, ``We take the security of our customers' data very seriously. Accurate and accessible information is key to protecting our customers' hard-earned deposits. After conducting an intensive one-year analysis, it was clear that EMC offered the right solution to support our longstanding commitment to superior data protection.''

Frank Hauck, EMC's Executive Vice President of Customer Operations, said, ``Citizens is relying on EMC's expertise and advanced technology to deliver a roadmap to business continuity success. We will continue to invest in our product development and services to ensure we provide business continuity solutions that lead the industry in features, performance and reliability.''

Citizens is working closely with EMC Global Services consultants to design and implement a business continuity strategy and solution. The bank will use EMC SRDF's advanced Multi-Hop capability to mirror data from its primary data center to two alternate locations across a 50-mile area. EMC Symmetrix systems in each location will be linked via high-speed Fibre Channel and IP networks. In the event of an outage, Citizens will be able to recover its data in seconds. EMC also will be providing technical training, mentoring and day-to-day assistance to Citizens' IT staff.

``EMC Global Services brings tremendous expertise to business continuity discussions,'' said Trudel. ``We are impressed with their successful track record of safeguarding critical information in business environments over the last ten years and believe they can provide us with the knowledge we need to succeed at business continuity in the long term.''

Based in Providence, R.I., Citizens Financial uses EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage to provide centralized storage to its IBM MVS mainframe computers. The bank's EMC infrastructure supports all of its business-critical applications, including customer databases, account management and ATM authorizations. In addition to SRDF, Citizens relies on EMC TimeFinder, PowerPath, ControlCenter and Symmetrix Optimizer software to make data management more cost-efficient and further increase availability of information.

Citizens' recent acquisition of Mellon Financial Corporation's retail, small business and certain middle-market businesses was another factor in the demand for more storage. Citizens is consolidating information about its new customers in Pa., Del. and N.J. onto its EMC storage infrastructure.

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC - news) is the world leader in information storage systems, software, networks and services, providing the information infrastructure for a connected world. Information about EMC's products and services can be found at www.EMC.com.
