Reports are that this was an Aero-Commander, and that the pilot in that type of aircraft has to twist around behind him to reach the manual gear extension pump. I don't know how many strokes on the hand pump it takes on an Aero Commander, but on the retractable gear aircraft I fly, it's something like 38 strokes - more than long enough to crash into something that happens to be sticking up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
