"open trade with Israel"....don't you mean the Israeli's would cut-off their source of menial labor?

That remark reminds me of the baloney dished out by Le Front National in France - got to seal up the borders against immigration. Never mind that the French seem to be doing so well that they themselves refuse to do any "menial labor". Or are they doing that well? Unemployment is high by US standards, and this isn't because people love living on Revenu Minimum d'Insertion.

The fact is that Palestinian construction workers had done a major part of the work in the "colonies". The Gaza strip is nearly entirely supplied by Israel, and this is controlled by Arafat's associates (who have made themselves millionaires in US dollars.)

Be realistic, the time was not ripe for the Jenin shopping mall before the Intifada was launched, whoever the heck one wants to point the finger at, but isolation is not the long term answer. History is clear on this - the more one attempts to tighten borders, the more corruption increases. This is a primary reason every Soviet block country was a cesspool of corruption. And it'll only strengthen Hamas and other terrorist mafia in the long run.

The Palestinians will need all the "open trade" they can get with Israel, since I don't know of any thriving trade going on with Jordan or other neighboring countries.

Hmmm.. considering Israel built and maintains most of their road and utility infrastructure, it would seem the tradeoff is pretty good and beats working for the Kuwaitis who pay even less.

When's the last the Palestinian authority paid their power bill to the Israeli utility companies??

They won't even pay the rent on the DC headquarters... They just got evicted last week.

Yet, Arafat's wife lives in Paris, and he controls well over a $1 Billion worth of funds supposedly donated as aid to "his people"..
