There is no reason to believe that a systematic campaign to get rid of Arabs was pursued......

The best reason to believe that such a campaign was pursued, along with the direct testimony of the leaders of the campaign, is that such a campaign would have been the only sensible move at the time. The Zionists wanted "a state as Jewish as England is English", how could they have that with a huge Arab population in their midst? The Arabs were their enemies, of course they wanted to get rid of them. Why would they want anything else? The notion that this obvious imperative was somehow disregarded was manufactured later, when reality became inconvenient.

As for Begin, he is charging the Arabs with spreading wild tails of Irgun butchery.

I'm sure the Arabs did spread the tale. Tales like that generally spread pretty quickly, especially when they are true. I don't doubt that the tale was intended to spread.
