Tim, what would be the best way to put a dent in our oil dependency is to conserve our oil Here in the West water is short and so we are required to conserve it from time to time

The state and local governments make people conserve water why subsidizing it for industrial and esp. agricultural use. If you had a free market in water with the price allowed to float with supply and demand you would not need the government enforced conservation.

Tim, you're wrong on that. It varies from state to state but last year when we had a water shortage in WA, the farmers got cut severely and rationing for them was mandatory whereas our rationing was voluntary. The priority usually is first people, then crops, then animals.

We need to start doing the same with oil especially now, because any new drilling will not get us real relief for at least 3-5 years.

Oil doesn't have a shortage in the same sense of those water shortages because its price is allowed to float and it doesn't get heavy subsidies in the US. If oil supplies get tighter or demand grows the price will rise which will serve to decrease demand.

There is a shortage of oil in this country. We do not produce enough oil ourselves so we must import it. That in and of itself should make us conserve but we are incredibly self indulgent. It makes us dependent, compliant and leads us down roads that we might otherwise not go.

You and I as individuals could not afford to live the way this country operates......running up deficits, consuming an inordinate share of the world's resources etc. That's at least part of the reason why bin Laden and ai Qaeda think we would be easy.....he sees us as soft....nothing but pushovers.
