Chartered Semiconductor/H2 demand (Fab 7 production due late Q3 2003)
-- AFX - Asia, 4/19/2002

Chartered president and CEO Waite also said the company will accelerate the start-up of its latest wafer fab, Fab 7, by one quarter with production planned to start in late third quarter 2003.

The company also said it will increase its 2002 capital expenditure plan to 500 mln usd from 400 mln.

Waite said the more than 40 pct quarter-on-quarter revenue growth in its consumer market segment in the first quarter is unlikely to be sustainable.

"The consumer segment was up more than 40 pct but it is still a small part of the pie. I don't expect it to continue to grow in an exaggerated strength
compared to other segments," he said.

For the first quarter, the consumer segment contributed 22 pct to total revenue, compared to 16 pct in the fourth quarter of 2001 and 10 pct in the third quarter.

Waite said the sharp increase in revenue contribution from the consumer segment in the fourth quarter was due to one-off orders and anomalies.

Waite also said that the company expects its wireless segment to grow further due to new designs on the 0.18 micron wafers which are taking off.

"We've really got wider sides of the platforms with new products which are growing but relative to a very low base in the wireline world. So, I think we're going to see good strong growth," he said.

However, Waite said that the 5.0 pct increase in average selling price, which the company had forecast for this year, is not only due to the expected increase in shipments of its 0.18 micron semiconducter wafers but from the mix
of wafers it expects to ship this year.
