"GOOD News" Toshiba Reopens Memory-Chip Production Line in Japan (Update1)

Tokyo, April 19 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp., the world's second-biggest chipmaker, reopened one of its two production lines in Japan making chips for digital cameras and mobile phones, an indication demand may be improving.

The Tokyo-based company suspended the production line at its Yokkaichi plant in western Japan in September. The company began reusing the line at the beginning of the month, company spokesman Kenichi Sugiyama said in an e-mail sent to Bloomberg News.

With demand for mobile-phone memory chips recovering, Toshiba will operate the plant through Japan's Golden Week holidays from end of April through the first week of May, Sugiyama said. Increasing demand for mobile phones in China is driving the industry's recovery, analysts said.

``The Chinese market is growing very rapidly,'' said Yoshihide Otake, an analyst at Tsubasa Research Institute, who rates Toshiba ``average.'' ``Global chip sales will rise about 10 percent in the April-June period from a year ago, mainly because of demand from China.''
