ROK Produces 47 Pct of World's DRAM Chips Korea accounted for 47 percent of the global dynamic random access (DRAM) chips in the first quarter of this year.

Korea is ahead of the U.S., Taiwan, the EU and Japan, which churned out 18 percent, 16 percent, 12 percent and 7 percent of the total global DRAM chips, according to a memory chip industry news provider DRAMeXchange.

It reported South Korea strengthened its market dominance, raising its market share from 41.5 percent recorded last year, to the 47 percent level.

So far, the industry's new providers have only released yearly reports on production figures.

Last year, Samsung Electronics took 27 percent of the world market and Hynix Semiconductor claimed 14.5 percent.

A breakdown of the chipmakers' production was not released in the quarterly report.

By DRAM items, South Korea took 44.5 percent share for synchronous DRAM, producing 257.2 million units. One unit is equivalent to 128 megabytes.

Way behind the lead is the U.S. with 109.75 million units.

In the double data rate (DDR) DRAM market, Korea secured 48.1 share in the first three months, rolling out 110.6 million units, almost double the 60.3 million unit production recorded in Taiwan.

South Korea also churned out 36 million units of Rambus DRAM during the period, capturing 69 percent of the world's production. The only other producer Japan accounted for the remaining amount of 16.2 million units.

The increase in general market share is attributable to the fact that Samsung has recently started operation of its 300mm wafer production lines.

''Hynix's DRAM production edged down from the fourth quarter last year to the first quarter. Therefore the rise in the country's market share is solely due to Samsung,'' said an industry watcher.
