UMC to give Taiwan priority as site for 4th 12-inch-wafer fab

United Microelectronics Corp said Taiwan is the most
likely site of its planned fourth 12-inch-wafer fab, though no decision has yet
been made.

UMC has determined after in-depth assessment that both the US and Europe are
unsuitable as locations for the new plant, senior vice president KF Chi was
quoted by the Commercial Times as saying.

Chi added, however, that Taiwan has to improve its investment environment in
order for semiconductor companies to invest more at home.

One example of Taiwan's problem is the smell emanating from a nearby chicken
farm at the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park, he added.
