snippet from G-S's research on MSFT earnings this morning - interesting part for CPQers is BOLDED:

March Q3 rev of $7.25 bil was above our $7.1 bil est and operating EPS of $0.48 was above our $0.41 est. Investors were initially confused by the non-operating items, but when sorting it out we were pleased with the quarter results. Mgt talked down Street estimates, but for the most part this was directionally consistent with our earlier reductions. The Xbox price cuts and resulting price protection allowances are likely the largest reason for a reduction in June estimates. New FS 2003 estimate of $1.92 is close to our earlier $1.95 est.

This is the first quarter in a year that PC demand has been a bit better than expected and seems to be picking up, a likely benefit for the stock, which is rated RL.

In what its executives called probably their last earnings call before the closing of their acquisition by Hewlett-Packard, Compaq reported a profit of $44 million, or 3 cents a share, on sales of $7.7 billion. In the period last year, Compaq had sales of $9.2 billion but posted a loss of $131 million, or 8 cents a share, as it restructured to deal with the slowing economy

Sooooooooo, if CPQ can earn .03 on revs of 7.7 bil this Q, how much would CPQ have earned if the economy were healthy and they had matched last years revs?
