But the rice is mostly "wild" rice and it is several times more expensive than the rice imported from elsewhere. And the amount harvested is quite insignificant.

While driving through the backroads of Michigan and Minnesotta in the summertime, I have often seen roadside signs advertising wild rice. The rice for sale was probably last year's crop.

In many instances the wild rice was harvested by native Indians in canoes, especially in Manitoba. Not a pleasant job considering the superabundance of blackflies and mosquitoes even in the milder heat of late summer! I guess ordinary folks will have to wear insect repellant-soaked clothings and protective face-nets as if they were going to fish in the wilds.

<<Rice is produced widely in Ontario in Lakes and Rivers. It is seasonally harvested by some commercial operations and finds its way into shelf products. It is illegal to farm rice in Ontario >>

I say again, wild rice is not rice.

"Rice is the principal food crop in practically all the tropical realons of the world as well as in most subtropical areas and in some temperate zone areas having a relatively long growing season."
