b2l,

If AMD were to win x-Box contract, it will be with a Hammer derivative, not Athlon. X-Box shares a lot of code with Windows, and it would assure complete support for x86-64.

I think the value of x-box to AMD would have been imense, and it was a great loss, IMO. Mainly for bragging rights and closer relationship with Microsoft, but the bottom line contribution would be tangible as well.

Austin Fab could have easily produced Durons that would have been able to run circles around Piii-733. I don't know about the run rate, but let's assume 1 million per quarter at $50. It would have meant a difference between profit and loss this quarter, since the capacity is idle.

Joe

re: Intel gives Xbox -> AMD? / " 5. drive AMD ASP’s lower"

ASPs aren't really an issue. If Intel/AMD has the production capacity and there is no better use for this capacity then even $20 chips which cost $19 to make is a good deal. They make a dollar. Sure the ASPs drop... but the profit increases. Sorry if this is nitpicking...

The Xbox chips seemed like a great match for producing a mature processor design at facilities which were no longer cutting edge and otherwise might be underutilized - either for P3-0.18 or Duron-0.18.
