re: Handsets Overtaking DRAM Exports in Korea

* Samsung achieved total sales of W1.88 trillion in exports of memory chips in the first quarter this year, in stark contrast to W2.44 trillion in exports of handsets.

* 90 percent of its memory chips and 75 percent of its handsets have been exported. In terms of the export value, mobile sets have already outpaced memory chip items.

* Samsung said that it exported a total of 7.1 million handsets in the first quarter, an increase of 100 percent on year.

* LG Electronics, the second largest handset maker in the country expects to ship a total of 11 million handsets this year, up 57 percent over last year.

Korea-made handsets are about to make a grass-root change in the country's export industry. According to sources, exports of cellular handsets have been rising rapidly since last year and will likely overtake Korea's DRAM memory chips, currently the leading export item for the country, in exports this year.

According to the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) Monday, the total exports of handsets in the first quarter reached US$1.94 billion, up a strong 32 percent from the same period last year. This figure far exceeded the total export value of DRAM chips, which stood at US$1.48 billion, in the same quarter, and was close behind the total export value of all memory chips of US$2.2 billion.

KITA said that, up until 1998, Korea-made handsets were not among the top export items for the country, adding that this rapid increase in the export of mobile sets will propel mobile sets past chip products in exports soon.

Nowhere is the export rally by cellular sets more evident than in the performance of Samsung Electronics. Samsung achieved total sales of W1.88 trillion in exports of memory chips in the first quarter this year, in stark contrast to W2.44 trillion in exports of handsets.

Samsung said more than 90 percent of its memory chips and 75 percent of its handsets have been exported. As such, in terms of the export value, mobile sets have already outpaced memory chip items.

Samsung said that it exported a total of 7.1 million handsets in the first quarter, an increase of 100 percent on year. LG Electronics, the second largest handset maker in the country following Samsung, said it expects to ship a total of 11 million handsets this year, up 57 percent over last year.

Memory chip items first took over as the nation's top export item back in 1994, passing shipping vessels in that year, and they have finished atop the rankings in terms of exports in four different years during the eight-year period since then. When chip products weren't number one, the top spot went to either automobiles or ships. <<
