Fred - W/ regard Europe - ...All of my European acquaintances expressed their shock and grief at the WTC as did most of Europe at the time. And they have given us both moral support and military/security support because of that attack. ...However I agree that the attack is the result of US policies. Specifically, if we had not been supporting Israel, if we hadn't chased Iraq out of Kuwait, if we didn't have soldiers on Saudi soil - then the WTC wouldn't have been attacked. These are policies that we chose to pursue for good reason. I supported those policies at the time and I support them now (with some caveats and reservations). ...And I am prepared to accept that there will be some nasty consequences to our policies - even the noble ones. ...As for not sharing the outrage - that doesn't bother me. When I suffer an outrage I look to my friends for sympathy and for support. But I also rely on them for their good judgement at times when my judgement is impaired by anger and rage. I'd hate to think of what my life would be like if my friends egged me on every time I wanted to smash someone in the face. Can you say - three strikes? ...As for Israel and Palestine - let me tackle that in a separate post - I am about to take on the entire board on that one - pro-I and pro-P alike. (Thankfully the market is frozen by options expirations today).

Fred, Interesting that the French get LePen in the runoff. Not a surprise to this Jew. Runes says that our policies get us the WTC attack. I dont buy that at all. If we kissed their arses the terrorists would still hate Christian American just as they cant stand Jewish Israel. The only way we can prevent future terrorism is to not appear to be weak. Perhaps both the US under Clinton and Israel under Barak gave that false signal--clinton in somalia and israel in lebanon. In that sense what followed is ours and the Israelis responsibility but for far different reasons that Runes alludes to. I am not crazy about sharon either, but after listening to dennis ross yesterday on Fox regarding the final clinton proposal and arafats refusal to sign at the end, i dont know what other strategy would work at this time. Each time the Pals/arabs lose a war they demand status quo ante for the earlier war. When Palestinians talk of Palestine, i fear, regardless of what they say, they are talking about pre-1947 Israel or in other words no israel at all. And then of course there is saeb arakat talking about the Israelis drinking beer out of the skull of dead palestinians in Jenin. Another blood libel. Euros love to hear that. mike
