The conscience of our age has deemed that, “what goes on behind closed doors between consenting adults is nobody else’s business.” On the surface, I have no problem with this statement. However, as it turns out there is a fundamental flaw with the “behind closed doors” premise.

The implication is that we are talking about private acts that have no potential to harm persons outside of the behind closed doors setting. In fact, what goes on behind closed doors between two consenting adults are not truly private acts. If any two participants were able to encapsulate their experiences in such a way as to never impact society in any way, I would be very impressed. There may be material manifestations that extend beyond the closed door; such as, pregnancy, communicable disease, legal cases, etc. There are sociological, psychological, and personal impacts that extend beyond the door. There is a high correlation between the social ills of our society and the impacts of irresponsible acts performed by consenting adults.
