NEW YORK - Microsoft came up 2 cents short for its fiscal third quarter, reporting earnings of 49 cents per share on revenue of $7.25 billion.

Analysts polled by First Call on average expected Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) to report earnings of 51 cents per share on revenue of $7.3 billion, compared to 44 cents on $6.5 billion a year ago. The $847 million sale of Internet travel service Expedia (nasdaq: EXPE - news - people ) to USA Networks (nasdaq: USAI - news - people ) contributed about 10 cents per share to earnings. Net profit was $2.74 billion, up 12% from $2.45 billion a year earlier.
