In general, it's best to let the market take it's course. But if the goal is to reduce our dependencies on the Middle East, I'd rather see something else developed than go another round with oil. I would rather see a long term solution than to keeps applying bandaids...

In addition to fuel cells, there are several companies like CPST that are producing smaller turbines which are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. They still are small but are growing fairly fast.

combjelly,

I asked you this question elsewhere, which is what is the source of fuel for these fuel cells. If my assumption that the source is oil, than they are not a long term solution to power generation.

I gather from other replies that they can be more efficient than internal combustion engines to power cars, which would be a big plus.

The bottom line (IMO) is that the world needs more and more energy, the increasing need for energy is unstoppable (stopping it may not be all that desirable), if there is a concern about pumping more CO2 into atmosphere, we need to switch to nuclear, or possibly solar for some percentage of power, which are the only long term solution.

I wonder if there is any merit to the Sci-Fi concepts such as of assembling gigantic mirrors in space, pointing them to some collection point on earth, which would be the power plant. Something like this would make it less burdensome than running billion power plant on roofs of the houses.
