I will buy everything you say and conclude that the only solution is a decisive victory by one side or the other.

Runes,
Dont have the strength to reply because in a narrow sense you have it right. In the larger sense you miss how this got started with arafat turning down a sweetheart deal 20 months ago. Today on Fox sunday dennis ross is very specific on what was rejected by arafat apparently after approval by most of the pal delegation. No cantons--contiguous palestine
Start your history there and you get an entirely different take.
1. Arafat kills the deal by starting the infitada on the day sharon goes to the western wall
2. Arafat approves of suicide bombing technique to get israellis to abandon west bank just as they did in lebanon
3. Israeli know the difference between west bank and lebanon and elect sharon
4. arafat steps up suicides and his own groups start to participate.
5. After months of provocation israelis make their first incursion which produces more of the same--Arafat should have realized what would come next
6. As WC says, now its time for there to emerge a victor and that is israel--Tough shit Europeans
7. We are back to the 70's in terms of peace hopes--now we can hope for cease fires and a post arafat period where MAS and moderate Pals takeover--long shot at best OR Israel buffer zones on west bank with fences, etc that protect israel from most(not all) terrorism. And of course and eye for an eye when there are terror strikes.

Mike
PS You didnt think outside the box at all--you just went to the euro box where they accept what you say as fact. Go back to clintons last days and think what could have been. Arafat the terroist won out over arafat the peacemaker and that is why we are where we are today
