My son (12) is a demon sailor. He sails a little Laser, we get access through a deal I brokered between the school and the yacht club. He sails it a lot better than I do; I find it a squirrely little thing. I use our boat, 18' Prindle catamaran. Speed freak boat. Faster than any sailboat on the bay by a long shot. I end up chasing him around; he's more maneuverable than I am. He doesn't like to sail the cat, too much sail for him to handle, but if it's really cranking we'll both go to the harnesses, ride the thing up on one hull, and do the bay.

Best thing about it is that if you learn it at that age, you never forget. He'll always know how to sail a small boat, no matter what else happens.
