You know why those rainforests are being cut down (mostly)? For farmland. To keep people here now alive. If they don't have that, the gov'ts have civil unrest, rebellion, revolution... and someone gets installed who lets them have that land.

And the chemical (fertilized) farming? Agricultural productivity has increased enormously because of it. Remember the Green Revolution? But lots of people were born because of it. The human population doubled. But those chemicals and factory farms have lots of ecological side effects.

How do you propose to back out of this? In a realistic manner. Because you've got to keep the populace from throwing you out. Otherwise you accomplish nothing.
