Yep, China foundries are in talks
The rumors are still running rampant about an alliance between two silicon foundry startups in China--Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) of Shanghai and Huaxia Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (HSMC) of Beijing.

The companies are reportedly pooling their resources and build an 8-inch fab in Beijing. The deal is supposed to be announced April 18 (see Heard on the Beat, April 12 ).

Contacted about the proposed SMIC-HSMC alliance, a spokeswoman from SMIC dropped hints that there are in fact preliminary talks going on between the two companies. Beyond that, the spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter.--M.L.
