On the other hand, if Microsoft were to announce support for the (now hypothetical) Yamhill instructions, and not announce support for Hammer, it will raise the spectre of some sort of quid pro quo deal between Intel and Microsoft...

What does it matter whether support is "announced" or not. Jerry gave the impression during his testimony that there are already several hundred engineers porting the OS. Whether it gets announced tomorrow or next year shouldn't make a difference, except PR wise.
