If you belong the AAA (auto club) you can buy travelers checks, without fee, at the current exchange rate (or nearly) any time. I have several thousands of dollars worth of Swissies in my safe deposit box, and now you can buy euros. You can pay your hotel bills in Europe with them--or elsewhere.

Of course every time you pay a bill with appreciated travelers checks, you inform the IRS of this ;)
