I knew you could do it, to leave the shallow thinking behind and open your mind.

Joe, you've lost me.

Having said that, I accept the need for oil until the time comes when we change the fuel that runs our economy. Therefore, my intent is to use it as sparingly as possible and if I had my druthers this country would go on a long overdue oil diet. It would do our trade deficits some good and maybe allow us to be more honest in our foreign diplomacy.

I am all for using oil sparingly, and personally do use oil very sparingly in my life (I admit, it was not a plan, more like a coincidence), but I would not go further with this recommandation than voluntary basis.

Why, when most people are not voluntarily making the effort and any attempt to pass higher taxes are oil are short circuited?

If there was an area where individual action counts more than anything, this is it. Suppose 50% of the population cuts their consumption of oil and oil derived products by 50%. You suddenly have the country using 25% less oil.

Again, why not make voluntary rationing mandatory>

When you lose me is when you start talking about compulsory actions, imposing your views, when so much can be (and is not) done on voluntary basis.

How do you figure?

One other thing.......I find a recurrent theme in conservative rhetoric both on and off this thread that liberals tend to be deficit in the brain department.

I know way too many smart liberals for this to be true. I think it is not lack of capability, but lack of use of full brain capacity.

That's funny ......first of all, its alleged that none of us use our full brain capacity. In any case, how would you know that as a liberal, I fit that bill.

That's easy........fighting your friends [your fellow conservatives] who want to drill in the ANWR.

Are you saying you would leave the oil there forever, unused, even if a possible oil shortage some time in the future would potentially crash the economy, cause unemployment, poverty starvation, hunger, deaths? Or you would just not use it now?

In the future, if its needed and we could extract without damaging the environment there at all, I would go for it. By why does everything have to be used because its there? For many people, there is as much value in the beauty of the ANWR as in its oil. And yet, because you have conservative values and don't want mandatory restrictions placed on your lifestyle, you would allow it to be damaged, wouldn't you?

I personally would not use it now, but (as posted few days ago), it would be a great idea to use it as a greatly expanded strategic petroleaum reserve, buy building up the capacity to extract oil, but the actual extraction would not start now. It would only start in case of a potential shortage in the future.

In a compromise, I could go for that........but the Dems. have control of the Senate. ;~))
