HAMAS ISSUES DEATH THREAT TO SHARON April 20, 2002 National Post Online reports: " The Palestinian terrorist group Hamas threatened yesterday to assassinate Ariel Sharon, Israel's Prime Minister, to avenge the capture of one of Yasser Arafat's top aides. 'You have opened the gates of hell,' warned the Hamas statement faxed to a French news agency a day after Israeli forces captured Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian legislator blamed for inciting and orchestrating terrorist attacks. Hamas, which killed 25 Israeli civilians in a bombing on the eve of Passover, also issued an Internet appeal to Muslims around the world to help it pay for weapons so it can continue its attacks, specifying the weapons it needs and their estimated cost… Danny Ayalon, Mr. Sharon's foreign affairs advisor, dismissed the threat against the Prime Minister. 'The Hamas threat against Sharon is not in the least increased by the arrest of Barghouti. If they had their way they would have done it long ago. We are talking about a terrorist organization which is bent on the destruction of Israel.' Hamas is one of the handful of terrorist groups that operate in the Palestinian territories. The hardline Islamic group has staged terror attacks since 1993. It calls suicide bombers the 'F-16s' of the Palestinian people…"
